Interior and frescoes

Villa Dionisi is one of the most interesting artistic monuments of the 18th century in the Verona area. At the Villa we can find besides portraits by Giuseppe Montanari (?-1775) an interesting painter and architect, frescos and paintings of the Marcola family, who lived in the Villa from 1743 on with their primogenitor Giovan Battista (1704-1776). The activities of the different artists who were involved in the decoration of the Villa was well documented by the memoirs of Marquis Gabriele Dionisi, which reveal the presence also of Taddeo Taddei and Giuseppe Gru. The construction of the Villa started in 1741 and in June 1742 it was already finished (except for the gallery). In the same year the fresco on the ceiling of the lounge was executed representing The coronation of one of the members of the Dionisi family. Around this scene oval portraits of other members of the family were placed. In July 1742 Montanari was asked to execute the decoration of the staircase, an elaborated frame contains in a solid block, three figures representing Astronomy, Music and Agriculture, surrounded by cupids.
The alcove was designed for the short stays of the Marquis’ brother the deacon Giovanni Jacopo. It is a real architectural beauty, inside with fine plaster decorations. The wise use of the sweetly curved lines of the arch, which border the bed area together and the light colours of the walls, on which the white colour is combined with other light colours, the saints in circles and the pretty heads on the capitals, all was made to create a harmonious unity.
The library, once study and archives of the Dionisi family, now contains a collection of books about furniture.
The first floor of the Villa is the seat of the Aldo Morelato Foundation. The foundation forms an outlook on applied art in the furniture field with activities such as research and promotion. The Aldo Morelato Foundation with the Outlook is intended to become an important resource for the development of a production area in the furniture field. The production of furniture already plays an important role in the economic life of the Verona region with importance also on national level.
